How do I care for a Rabbit: Services

Housing

Where can I keep my rabbit?

I frequently hear about animals in cages that are far too small for them. The general rule to avoid that is the rabbit needs a cage that he/she can stretch out 2-3 times in (depending on how much time they will be in the cage). I buy wire bottom 2x2x2 stackable cages from Tractor Supply. But why a wire bottom? With a wire bottom the animal droppings can drop through the floor into a cage that can be removed to be cleaned. This mean your rabbit wont get stains or things stuck in their fur. If you do buy a wire bottom cage I suggest going to Homedepo and buying a marble like floor piece for the rabbit to be able to sit on to get away from the wire. You can keep your rabbit outside and they wont have a problem with the cold as long as they are protected from wind and rain but the heat can cause many issues if not careful. to avoid any problems with heat. place rabbit cage in shade and p[lace a frozen water bottle in the cage for them to lay on.

Grooming

How to brush the fluff that is now your pet.

Long fur is beautiful till you get a matt. spending at least a few minutes a day brushing your rabbit will improve you and your rabbits life. You can avoid matts and future knots in fur. I suggest a cat flea comb used gently on a jersey woolly with no matts. If the rabbit has matts use a wide toothed comb and slowly try to untangle the fur. Thankfully Jersey Woolly fur isn't as prone to matts as an angora.

Dinner time

What do I feed them?

This is pretty simple. Alfalfa hay and small animal feed. You can find alfalfa hay at pretty much any pet store it will be in the small animal section including the small animal kibble. I prefer to buy my kibble in bulk from Rural King. Pretty much all the workers there can answer any and all concerns. For my rabbits at night i give them a sprinkle of black oil sunflower seeds and a few pieces of dried papaya.
